   Fashion designer
   Raised in a Dr Barnardo’s children’s home, Oldfield was fostered and trained by a tailor and dressmaker, Violet Masters, and became one of Britain’s most famous designers of evening wear. After designing for Bendel’s store in New York and selling sketches to Yves Saint Laurent, he launched his own readyto-wear collection in 1975 and a couture line in 1978. His glamorous, ultra-feminine ball gowns and party dresses have made him a consistently popular choice with celebrities, and his ‘rags to riches’ story made him an obvious role model for many in the 1980s. Famous enough to have appeared as a castaway on Desert Island Discs, the London-born Oldfield has become a popular designer with royalty, aristocracy and the showbusiness elite. In 1990 he was awarded an OBE.
